The Cinovec lithium-tin project is a high-grade underground deposit located in Prague, Czech Republic. It is the biggest lithium deposit in Europe and one of the biggest tin resources being developed in the world. European Metals Holdings fully owns the project and is also developing it with an investment of £383m ($482m).
The Bank’s investment will be used by EMH to progress its lithium mining project in the Czech Republic. The company owns 49 per cent of the Cinovec deposit, the biggest hard-rock lithium deposit in Europe and one of the largest undeveloped tin resources in the world.
A large underground mine was established to produce tungsten for the war effort. Mining and processing activities continued under the Czechoslovakian Government with the mine continuing to expand and producing tin as well as tungsten. Due to the fall of communism and lower tin prices, the mine was closed in 1993.
Once completed, the project will produce battery-grade lithium and by-products such tin and tungsten. A strategic raw material, lithium is used in the manufacturing of batteries and energy storage solutions and is in high demand by electric vehicle battery manufacturers.
