Bulk energy storage is currently dominated by hydroelectric dams, both conventional as well as pumped. There are six localities considered for new pumped-storage hydroelectric power plants in the Czech Republic but public acceptance presents a challenge. Front-of-meter installations in the Czech Republic are mired in regulations.
According the report, the main reason is the regulatory framework biased in favor of classical energy models. The Czech Republic is no exception. It is fair to say that none of available energy-accumulation technology is perfect yet, and cost-effectiveness can be reached under specific conditions only.
During 2022, the number of installations rose to almost 85,000 PV plants with a total capacity of 2,460 MWp. The development of wind energy in the Czech Republic also continues apace. The Czech government plans to triple the installed capacity from wind power by 2030, from the current 350 MW to 1 MW.
In 2023, law amendment to the Czech Energy Act and the Czech Construction Act became effective (nicknamed Lex RES I.), bringing set of changes to the RES permitting procedures in the Czech Republic. These include: No electricity generation licence is required for sources up to 50 kW.
There are several programmes designed under this scheme in the Czech Republic to support areas such as the modernisation of heating sector, transport modernisation, energy efficiency as well as the development of new renewable energy sources projects, for which about 40% of the whole Czech part of the fund is anticipated to be assigned to.
Fossil fuels, notably coal, still dominate the energy and electricity generation mix of the Czech Republic, but new climate targets at the European level will make coal less and less competitive. Therefore, the question is no longer if, but when, coal will exit the country’s energy mix.
