Rechargeable alkaline zinc–air batteries (ZAB) hold great promise as a viable, sustainable, and safe alternative energy storage system to the lithium-ion battery. However, the practical realization of ZABs is limited by their intrinsically low energy trip efficiency, stemming from a large charge and discharge potential gap.
Exploring effective energy storage systems is critical to alleviate energy scarcity. Rechargeable zinc-air batteries are promising energy storage devices. However, conventional rechargeable zinc-air battery systems face many challenges associated with electrolytes and electrodes, causing inferior electrochemistry performance.
Zinc–air batteries are viewed as a sustainable storage technology, but their commercialization requires a genuine performance leap forwards from the laboratory scale. Here the authors report a cell-level design and demonstrate an ampere-hour pouch cell with exceptionally high energy density and cycle lifespan.
The rechargeable zinc–air battery (ZAB) has attracted significant interest as a lightweight, benign, safe, cheap aqueous battery, with a high theoretical energy density (1086 Wh kg Zn−1), four times higher than current lithium-ion batteries. [1 - 4]
Rechargeable aqueous zinc-air batteries (ZABs) promise high energy density and safety. However, the use of conventional zinc anodes affects the energy output from the battery, so that the theoretical energy density is not achievable under operation conditions.
In addition, zinc–air fuel cells are also of great potential interest for smart grid energy storage and production. This review aims to report on the latest progresses and state-of-the-art of primary, secondary and mechanically rechargeable zinc–air batteries, and zinc–air fuel cells.
